I was doing some investigating and noticed an inconsistency in the Morningstar Shares Outstanding data.
There seems to be an inconsistent methodology for dealing with splits in calculating the share count. I spotted the issue using AAPL (I haven't looked into any other examples yet). Based on the documentation for shares_outstanding, the share count is NOT adjusted for corporate action events including splits. AAPL had two splits since 2004, a 2-for-1 on February 28, 2005 and a 7-for-1 on June 9, 2014. However, It appears that the share-count adjusted for the split back in 2005 but not the split in 2014.
Please see the attached notebook.
