New Feature: Drag and Drop in Research

We're happy to announce that you can now more easily organize files and folders in Research with the new drag and drop feature.

To move a file or folder, drag it into a folder or up a directory level by using the ".." folder. Here is an example of dragging and dropping in action:

There are a few restrictions:

  • Files and folders cannot be dragged in or out of the "data" and "Tutorials and Documentation" folders.
  • Running notebooks cannot be moved.
  • Folders holding a running notebook can be moved, but doing so will shut down the notebook kernel. This is a known bug and we are working to prevent the dragging of folders with any running notebooks inside.
  • Items can only be dragged one at a time. We are planning to add the ability to select and drag multiple items at once.

The ability to move files in Research has been one of our most requested features, so we're excited to deliver this new drag and drop feature! A quick shoutout to Tim Shawver and Preston Yadegar, two of our former team members that also helped bring this feature to life.
